Florida – A motorcycle racer was killed in a crash after traveling at nearly 300 miles per hour. As reported by The Christian Science Monitor, Bill Warner, 44, of Wimauma, Fla. was clocked at 285 mph prior to his losing control of his modified Suzuki Hayabusa and crashing.

Warner was racing in “The Maine Event” at Loring Air Force Base when the accident occurred on Sunday. He was reportedly conscious following the crash around 10 am, but died a short time later at the hospital.

Warner previously hit 311 mph while riding the motorcycle on the same course in 2011, and was purportedly trying to hit 300 mph using a shorter distance of pavement than he used previously.

Tim Kelly, race director with the Loring Timing Association, is quoted in the report as stating, “No one will touch Bill’s achievements or be the type of racer he was. He was a personal friend and the land-racing community is less for his loss.”
