Austin, Texas – Almost three weeks after a filibuster and Senate gallery disruption prevented a deadline vote on sweeping abortion restrictions, the Texas Senate passed the new legislation on Friday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), House Bill 2 is expected to be signed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry after weeks of protest about the new restrictions.

Perry called a new special session so that legislators could again take up the measure amid protests from thousands. Provisions of House Bill 2 will prohibit abortions after 20 weeks, prohibit abortions from taking place outside of surgical centers, require doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, and restrict the administration of abortion inducing pills.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards is quoted as stating to the AP about the bill’s passage Friday, “In the long run, all they have done is built a committed group of people across this state who are outraged about the treatment of women and the lengths to which this Legislature will go to take women’s health care away.”
