Washington – The Supreme Court made landmark rulings Tuesday that gave a boost to gay marriage. As reported by Reuters, the court struck down a section of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and determined in a separate ruling that a lower court’s decision that the Proposition 8 gay marriage ban in California was unconstitutional could stand.

With the court’s decision to strike down Section 3 of DOMA, legally married couples will be able to claim over 1,100 federal rights and benefits associated with the status of marriage.

Justice Anthony Kennedy is quoted by Reuters as writing for the majority in the court’s ruling in the DOMA case, “The federal statute is invalid, for no legitimate purpose overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure those whom the state, by its marriage laws, sought to protect in personhood and dignity.”
