Austin, Texas – Texas lawmakers gave preliminary approval to a strict abortion bill on Monday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the approval was given to Senate Bill 5 during the Texas Legislature’s special session as more than 800 demonstrators descended in the hallways of the Capitol to protest the passage of the measure.

As noted by the AP, the bill would place a ban on abortions after the 20th week, limit the locations of where abortions could be performed and require doctors who perform them to have admitting privileges at hospitals close by.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, who is also the daughter of the late former Texas governor Ann Richards, is quoted by the AP as stating of the measure, “If this passes, abortion would be virtually banned in the state of Texas, and many women could be forced to resort to dangerous and unsafe measures.”

Final approval must still be granted by the House, and 24 hours must pass thereafter before the measure can be considered by the Senate.
