Texas – An exoneree who was released from prison after being wrongly convicted is being challenged by his ex-wife for a portion of the compensation he was awarded by the state. As reported by The Texas Tribune, Traci Tucker, the former wife of Steven Phillips is claiming she is entitled to a part of the compensation package awarded to Tucker, which totals approximately $6 million.

Tucker was awarded an estimated $2 million in lump sum payments and a monthly annuity of over $11,000 after being wrongly imprisoned for 24 years. He was convicted in 1982 and 1983 for sex crimes, which DNA tests cleared him of more than two decades later. He and Tucker were married at the time of his convictions, but divorced in 1992.

Tucker is quoted in the report as stating of the case, “It’s not all about the money…There’s just no recognition whatsoever. Just ‘sorry folks, sorry we ruined your life and took your provider and your best friend.’ Nothing.”
