Walkill, NY — A teenager who was headed to his high school prom was tragically killed after being involved in a wreck with an 18-wheeler. The fatal automobile accident occurred at Route 17 and Interstate 84, WABC.com reports.

According to officials, 17-year-old Armando Colon, a junior and honors student at Middletown High School, was traveling with three other people in his car when the accident occurred. Colon was reportedly coming off of Route 17 and was about to merge onto westbound I-84, when he came into contact with the rear wheels of a semi-truck and veered into a grassy knoll.

Police contributed the wreck to a combination of wet roads, driver inexperience and fast speeds for the road conditions.

A 19-year-old, who was the front seat passenger, sustained minor injuries. The two backseat passengers were not injured.

Colon was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigations into the fatal automobile accident are underway.
