Phoenix – A federal judge has determined that the constitutional rights of Latinos in Maricopa County were violated by policies and practices of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. As reported by The New York Times, Judge G. Murray Snow of United States District Court rendered his decision Friday stating the sheriff used racial profiling and illegal detentions to target Latinos.

Judge Snow is quoted in the report as stating in his written decision, “In an immigration enforcement context” the sheriff’s office “did not believe that it constituted racial profiling to consider race as one factor among others in making law enforcement decisions.”

In accordance with the ruling “race or Latino ancestry” cannot be used by the sheriff’s office as a factor for deciding to stop vehicles in which the occupants are Latino or discerning whether persons may be in the country illegally.

A class-action lawsuit was brought against Sheriff Arpaio and his officers in regards to racial profiling complaints.
