Birmingham, Alabama – Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have presented a challenge to a new Alabama law that places tighter restrictions on abortion clinics. As reported by Reuters, a lawsuit filed by the organizations states the law will result in the closing of multiple licensed health care centers that provide abortions in the state.

Proponents of the measure say it will improve the safety of abortions and care for patients. Others argue that it impedes on the constitutional rights of women.

Staci Fox, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Southeast, is quoted in the report as stating of the lawsuit, “We are in court to protect a woman’s ability to make her own personal, private, health-care decisions.”

The law was signed in April by Gov. Robert Bentley and is expected to become effective next month.
