Detroit – Arizona police are calling a fatal shooting involving a 4-year-old a tragic accident after piecing together the events of the incident. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the child was visiting with his father in Prescott Valley Friday when he accidentally shot his father with a loaded handgun he found on a television stand.

Justin Stanfield Thomas, 34, was said to have been picking up some things at a friends house when the child found the gun and pulled the trigger after asking what it was.

According to police, Thomas had texted the tenant of the home, James Williams, 26, to say he would be coming over, but the text was reportedly not read by Williams until after authorities arrived to investigate the incident.

No charges were expected to be filed in the case.

Police Sgt. Brandon Bonney is quoted by the AP as stating of Williams, “He really wasn’t in a position to know they were there or to go and secure his gun… With this person, living by himself, there wasn’t necessarily any legal requirement to keep that weapon locked away.”
