Arizona – The family of an Arizona mother of seven who was arrested last week by Mexican authorities says she’s innocent of the drug smuggling charges that have been brought against her. As reported by CNN, Yanira Maldonado is set to return to court on Wednesday after being jailed over the weekend. Mexican authorities claimed to have found 12 pounds o marijuana under Maldonado’s seat after she boarded a bus to return to the United States from a relative’s funeral.

Anna Soto, Maldonado’s daughter, is quoted by CNN as stating of her mother on “Piers Morgan Live” Tuesday night, “She’s an honest woman. She’s innocent. It’s not a place for someone of her kind… It hurts just to know that she’s there, to have seen her there. It’s not fair.”

Gary Maldonado, Yanira’s husband, who was also arrested, but released says he believes the arrests were made in an bribery attempt by Mexican soldiers.

Maldonado is being held at a women’s prison in Nogales, Mexico.
