Does Moving to a Different State Affect My Disability Benefit Eligibility?

Many applicants who have been approved for disability payments have questions about what would happen to their benefits if they were to move to another state. The outcome will be determined by whether one is receiving payments under the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program. If a person is a SSDI recipient, then moving to a different state will not affect their benefits. Those receiving SSI payments, however, may see changes based on whether supplementary sums to payments are provided by their new state of residence.

Individuals who were approved for SSI while living in a state that supplements federal payments may see a decrease in benefits if the next state they move to does not provide supplements. Although SSI payments are federal benefits, a majority of states add to what is paid by the federal government.

Beneficiaries may contact their local Social Security office for help calculating what their new payments may be if there is a difference in what they will receive after moving to a new state. Individuals must also contact the office to provide an update of their new address, if moving, and keep in mind that pending decisions may be delayed if an applicant moves prior to receiving an approval decision.
