A 53-year-old man from New York City was arrested and charged Sunday, April 21, 2013, after authorities stated he ran over a 21-year-old woman the morning prior and left the scene of the accident. The woman was killed, adds NYC pedestrian accident lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter.

According to police reports, Taja Johnson, of Mt. Vernon, was struck near West 133rd Street and Eighth Avenue in Manhattan at approximately 4:30 am, Saturday, April 20. Police found her lying in the middle of the road. After the young woman was transported to Harlem Hospital, she was pronounced dead.

The hit-and-run driver was arrested Sunday after he turned himself in to police. The man was charged with leaving the scene of the fatal accident, driving without a license and failure to exercise care.

New York City police report that the man was traveling southbound in a borrowed livery cab on Eighth Avenue when he struck the woman. Several published reports claimed the man borrowed the car from a licensed friend in order to make extra money.

The woman was hit after she either jumped from a silver Audi or was pushed from the vehicle following an argument with someone inside.

The Manhattan-area pedestrian accident investigation is ongoing, according to New York City police.
