New York – A gunman who killed two firefighters and injured others on Christmas Eve reportedly left a note of his plan to kill people. As reported by Reuters, the gunman, William Spengler, 62, opened fire on the firefighters after they responded to a house fire call. Spengler reportedly purposely set the Monday morning fire prior to the ambush, after which he shot and killed himself.

Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering is quoted in the report as stating of the attack, “This was a clear ambush on first responders… It was a combat condition. They were shooting at muzzle flash.”

Spengler is quoted as saying in the typewritten note of his intent, “I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down and do what I like doing best, killing people.”

The reported gunman was previously sent to prison for the beating death of his elderly grandmother in 1981.
