Parents say university failed to notify them of teen’s death

Lawrenceville, GA – The parents of a 17-year-old Valdosta State University freshman, who was found dead on campus, say the school failed to notify them of their daughter’s death. As reported by CBS Atlanta, the parents of Jasmine Benjamin, who was found dead in the common area of her dorm on Nov. 18, say they learned of their daughter’s death through a posting on Facebook.

Benjamin’s stepfather, James Jackson, is quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “For someone to be so insensitive not to reach out to the family, or not even to keep up with what’s going on because it’s a holiday and you’re going away on vacation or whatever you’re doing – it’s very, very hurtful to say the least.”

The university is quoted as releasing the statement on Monday, “Valdosta State University is continuing to work with law enforcement agencies in the their ongoing investigation into the death of Jasmine Benjamin.”

Authorities are reportedly investigating Benjamin’s death as a homicide.
