New York – A man whose wife died abroad after being denied boarding on multiple flights is pursuing legal action against three airlines. As reported by Good Morning America, Vilma Soltesz, 56, died in Hungary from kidney failure after purportedly being unable to return to the United States to see her doctors.

Soltesz, who weighed a reported 407 pounds and had one leg, flew with her husband from New York City to Budapest on KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. An attorney for her husband Janos Soltesz, Holly Ostrov-Ronai, is quoted in the report as stating of their plans for returning, “KLM asked them when they would be flying home so that they could make proper arrangements.”

According to Ostrov-Ronai, accommodations were not made by three airlines to allow Soltesz’s return to the U.S.

One of the airlines Soltesz was referred to, Lufthansa, is quoted as saying in a statement regarding the incident, “After several time-consuming attempts it was decided that for the safety of this passenger and the over 140 fellow passengers, Lufthansa had to deny transportation of the passenger… In order to avoid further delays which would have resulted in missed connections and severe inconvenience for other customers on board, this decision was unavoidable.”

Ostrov-Ronai is quoted in the report as stating of the incident, “They passed these people around from airline to airline and treated them with no dignity whatsoever, simply because they didn’t want to deal with the situation.”
