U.S. – Many view Halloween as a time of celebration and an opportunity for creative expression. Many; however, also view it as a time to engage in high jinks that could unfortunately, lead to serious consequences including legal ones. The following are five things to consider for ensuring that one’s Halloween celebration of choice is not only safe, but also within the boundaries of the law.

• Don’t drink and drive – Drinking and driving is not only dangerous for those who engage in it, but it can put the lives of others at risk. Individuals who are of the legal age to drink should always do so responsibly and make prior arrangements to get them safely back home in the event that they go out.

• Understand the difference between what’s scary and intimidating – Not everyone will laugh at pranks they find intimidating, and some can even meet the legal definition of crimes such as assault and battery. Steer clear of engaging in activities that can lead to criminal charges.

• Don’t engage in vandalism – Vandalism can include a number activities where a victim is left to clean up unwarranted messes or repair resulting damage. Activities some find amusing such as pumpkin smashing can lead to jail time.

• Don’t promote or engage in underage drinking – Underage drinking is never a smart or safe idea.

• Find fun alternatives – Questionable high jinks are not the only activities to do on Halloween. Visiting a haunted house, trick or treating, and attending costume parties are just a few of the fun alternatives individuals can participate in to have a fun and safe Halloween this year.
