New York – New York City is reportedly the first in the U.S. to approve a measure banning the sale of oversized sugary drinks. As reported by Reuters, the controversial measure aimed at reducing obesity was passed Thursday by an 8-0 vote with one abstention.

The sale of sugary drinks over 16 ounces is banned under the measure with the exception of convenience stores and groceries. A $200 fine may be implemented for violators of the ban.

Liz Berman, a business owner and chairwoman of New Yorkers for Beverage Choices, is quoted in the report as saying in a statement in opposition to the ban, “It’s sad that the board wants to limit our choices… We are smart enough to make our own decisions about what to eat and drink.”
