Nashville, Tennessee – A legal panel is seeking an improvement in custody laws for members of the military. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Uniform Law Commission, which is comprised of attorneys appointed by each state in the U.S., met this week to approve the passage of the Deployed Parents Custody and Visitation Act. The law purportedly serves to help standardize state laws with regards to custody rights for deployed parents.
Eric Fish, legal counsel for the Uniformed Law Commission, is quoted as stating of the act, “States are all across the board on those issues, so the impetus for the uniform act was to provide states with a well-conceived piece of legislation that takes the best practices from all the states that we have seen and give them some guidance.”
Upon approval, the commission will reportedly seek to introduce the code in state legislatures next year.
