Chicago – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has expressed support for an ordinance that would reduce the penalty for marijuana possession in small amounts. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Emanuel and Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy have expressed support for the ordinance indicating it would lead to a reduction in related arrests and give police more time to address more serious offenses.

Alderman Danny Solis is quoted by the AP as stating of the potential impact of the passage of the ordinance, “The irony is that the worst crime is happening in our city is happening in the same neighborhoods where the possession (arrests) are happening…The police officer is now going to be more in the neighborhoods that need him or her than in the district doing paperwork.”

The ordinance, which will fine individuals found to be in possession of 15 grams of marijuana, is expected to be voted on later in the month.
