Science Experiment Explosion at NY Middle School Injures Teacher, 3 Students

Liverpool, NY — A small explosion during a science experiment at a Liverpool middle school injured three students and a teacher on Thursday, April 26, 2012. The accident occurred around 1 p.m. at Soule Road Middle School during a demonstration in an 8th grade classroom, reported YNN.

According to reports the combustion was small and involved methanol gas in an eighth grade science lab.

Responding emergency crews rushed a teacher and three students, who were closest to the experiment to Upstate University Hospital for treatment of “significant burns.”

The teacher and two students since have been released, while a third female student remains hospitalized.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

Students from Soule Road Middle and Elementary schools were evacuated as a result. They were allowed to return after the building was deemed safe.

The classroom reportedly sustained minor damage.
