US – Injury deaths among children in the country have been on the decline. As reported by AFP Relax News, a US study shows childhood injury deaths decreased by nearly 30 percent, while infant suffocation deaths and deaths linked to fatal poisonings among teens have increased.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated despite the decrease in numbers, unintentional injuries remain the number one cause of death for minors in the country ages one to nineteen.

Motor vehicle accidents were also reported to remain the leading accidental cause of death among youths, even though there was shown to have been a 41 percent drop in car crashes from 2000-2009.

CDC Director Thomas Frieden is quoted by AFP as stating of the projection overall, “Kids are safer from injuries today than ever before. In fact, the decrease in injury death rates in the past decade has resulted in more than 11,000 children’s lives being saved.”

He further asserts, “But we can do more. It’s tragic and unacceptable when we lose even one child to an avoidable injury.”
