San Mateo County, CA — A crabbing accident claimed the life of a 49-year-old fisherman, when he was pulled into the ocean by a rope that was attached to a crab trap. The fatal work-related accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, aboard the 40-foot Seabird, about four miles out from Pescadero, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
James Harry Allshouse of South San Francisco was aboard the fishing boat when his arm got tangled in a rope that was tied to the crab trap.
Allhouse was pulled into the water, where he remained for at least two minutes before another deckhand, Scott Schmitz, and the boat’s pilot, Daniel Stuckley, managed to pull him back onto the Seabird.
Schmitz also became entangled in the rope, but he managed to hang on to the side of the boat and pull himself back on board.
Schmitz administered CPR, while Stuckley drove the boat back towards the shore. Allshouse was unconscious.
Stuckley sent out calls for help as the boat headed back to shore, in which a nearby ship, the Pale House, came to their aid.
A Pale Horse crewmember, Christian Larson, wasn’t able to jump from one vessel to another, so he swam to the Seabird and joined in on the CPR efforts.
A Coast Guard boat also arrived and transported Allshouse back to shore, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to Seton Coastside hospital for treatment. Allshouse was pronounced dead after arriving at 6:16 p.m.
California occupational safety investigators and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating the fatal crabbing accident.
