Bronx, NY (New York Auto Accident Attorney News)—In the state of New York 16,357 pedestrians were involved in motor vehicle accidents in 2010, according to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. But, one New York City borough has made it a priority to bring that number down in their neighborhood, explains Bronx accident attorney Jonathan C. Reiter.

An area plagued by the “highest vehicular accident and death rate in the city,” unveiled the first 20-mph Slow Zone on Monday, November 21, 2011, in the Claremont section of the Bronx, reports the New York Daily News.

The new 20-mph Slow Zone applies to the residential blocks between Southern Boulevard and West Farms Roads, and features nine speed bumps and 28 signs alerting motorists of the decreased speed limit from 30-mph.

Motorists have long used the Claremont area as a short cut to speed through, which has resulted in deadly traffic accidents, reports the New York City auto accident lawyer.

In Community Board 3, which includes Claremont, 46 people were injured and killed between 2006 and 2010, the NY Daily News revealed.

“Slow zones should be more prevalent in New York City boroughs, due to the high volume of pedestrian traffic, which often includes children walking to and from school. The chances of a pedestrian being struck by a car and surviving the collision are greatly lowered, which makes a pedestrian accident much more deadly. That is especially true when children are involved, who often forget to look both ways before darting out into the road,” explains Reiter, the New York auto accident attorney.

Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan told the NY Daily News, “A pedestrian struck by a vehicle going 20 mph has a 95% chance of surviving. But if hit by a car going 40 mph, a pedestrian’s chance of survival drops to 30%.”

The New York accident lawyer urges New York residents to request a Slow Zone in their own neighborhood to help further reduce the amount of injurious and fatal pedestrian and automobile accidents by visiting nyc.gov/dot.
