Chaptico, MD — A three-vehicle accident, involving a school bus and a drunk driver, injured 20 people in southern Maryland. The traffic accident occurred Tuesday night, November 22, 2011, around 9:30 p.m. on Route 234 at Mechanicsville Road in Chaptico, reported the Washington Post.

Maryland State Police reported that the bus was carrying students from Great Mills High School back home from a girls’ basketball game in Colonial Beach, Va., when the crash occurred.

John Patrick Kravats, 45, who was driving a truck, reportedly did not wait for a car that was about to make a left turn onto Mechanicsburg Road, causing the car and truck to collide and the truck to then hit the school bus, ABC 2 News reported.

Kravats was arrested and later charged with drunk driving.

Responding emergency crews transported seventeen occupants of the school bus, including the driver–another adult and 15 students—via an ambulance to an area hospital. They were all treated and released.

Two occupants of the car, including a 13-year-old girl, were also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Kravats also sustained minor injuries.
