New York, NY — A railroad tunnel collapsed under Park Avenue Thursday, November 17, 2011, killing a young sandhog, despite his father’s attempts to save him. The fatal workplace accident occurred around 8 p.m., in a LIRR tunnel under 37th St. and Park Avenue, reported the New York Daily News.

Michael O’Brien, 26, was working with his father, who was just 10 feet away, when O’Brien was hit by a falling piece of concrete.

O’Brien’s father attempted to save his son by administering CPR, before rushing him through the network of tunnels to a waiting ambulance at E. 48th St. and Park Avenue.

Responding emergency crews rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where his injuries proved fatal and he was pronounced dead.

It is unknown at this time what caused the concrete to fall on O’Brien.

O’Brien and his father were reportedly working on part of the East Side Access project, which will connect the LIRR to Grand Central Terminal.

Investigations into the fatal construction accident are underway.
