Chicago, IL — A battery explosion at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport injured a baggage handler on Tuesday, November 1, 2011. The workplace accident took place around 10:30 a.m. at O’Hare’s Terminal 1, reported WLS-TV.

Reports stated that as luggage was being unloaded in a ramp area, an industrial battery packed in a checked luggage accidentally discharged, which injured a baggage handler.

The United Airlines employee sustained burns to his arms, and was taken to Resurrection Hospital for medical treatment. He has since been released.

The incident launched a large response from police and fire crews who rushed to the scene.

“It was a little scary to pull up and see what was going on,” said United passenger Walter Reinthaler to WLS-TV. “There were probably six or seven big fire trucks, looked like a mobile command unit. There were probably 20 or 25 police cars out there on the tarmac.”

Police questioned the owner of the luggage and everything checked out. Police also do not believe there was any criminal activity.
