College Park, MD — A chemistry lab accident at the University of Maryland, sent two students to the hospital and caused the evacuation of a campus building on Monday, September 26, 2011, reported the Associated Press.

According to officials, the students were conducting an experiment with nitric acid and sulfuric acid, when the chemical combination was added into a chemical waste container, causing a violent chemical reaction that sparked a small fire in and near the laboratory chemical ventilation hood.

Two female students were injured as a result, who sustained first- and second-degree chemical burns and superficial cuts. They were rushed to a burn unit for medical treatment, where they are reportedly in good condition.

Two university employees had to be decontaminated, but did not need to be transported to a hospital.

The chemical reaction also caused the whole chemistry building to be evacuated, but by Monday afternoon they were allowed to re-enter the building.

Investigations are underway.
