Shirley, NY — A worker was seriously injured in an industrial accident at a beer distribution plant in Shirley on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, when his legs became entangled in a piece of machinery. The workplace accident occurred at Clare Rose Distributors on Rose Executive Boulevard at around 1:32 p.m., reported the Long Island Press.

Suffolk County police reported that 56-year-old Julio Granados’ legs became stuck in a large compacting baler at the plant, causing him to sustain traumatic injuries to both of his legs, which resulted in severe blood loss.

It is unknown at this time what caused Granados’ legs to become trapped in the baler.

Responding emergency crews extracted Granados from the machinery and stabilized him—to prevent further blood loss—before airlifting him to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he is in serious condition.

Seventh Squad detectives and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the industrial accident.
