Aspen, CO — A construction accident at a condominium complex killed a Minnesota man Thursday afternoon, August 11, 2011. The fatal construction accident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. at La Chamonix, a 12-unit building on Maroon Creek Road, reported Aspen Daily News.

According to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was trying to fix a malfunctioning 60-foot-long drill when the hydraulic construction equipment was restarted, causing the victim’s fall prevention cord to become entangled in the drill. This caused the victim to be spun around repeatedly.

Witnesses reported that the victim was unconscious and not breathing. It is not clear whether the trauma of the accident led to the man’s death or if he suffered a heart attack after becoming entangled.

“We believe it was the mechanism [of the spinning drill] that apparently killed him,” said Deputy Michael Kendrick, reported the Aspen Daily News.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time. But, he is believed to have been employed for a Broomfield-based construction company.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the fatal construction accident.
