Garbage Truck, Special Needs Van Crash Injured 13; Van Driver Charged with DUI

Newton, MA — Thirteen people were rushed to the hospital after a special needs van slammed into a stopped garbage truck in Newton. The automobile accident occurred Monday, August 1, 2011, around 9:15 a.m. near the intersection of Highland Street and Lockwood Road, reported Boston.com.

The driver of the special needs van, 51-year-old Addis Gabriel Woldeguiorguis of Dorchester, is now facing charges of driving under the influence of drugs, which likely led to the injurious collision.

Newton police reported that 13 people, including the driver of the van, were rushed to area hospitals for medical attention. Three of the van passengers sustained serious injuries in the wreck.

The three passengers were rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for treatment of their serious injuries. The front seat passenger, who was among the seriously injured, had to be extricated from the wreckage by the Jaws of Life.

The driver and nine other injured passengers, whose ages ranged from their 20s to their 60s, were transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital for treatment.

Woldeguiorguis was driving a van for AART Transportation at the time of the collision.

The two people with the Waste Management Services truck were uninjured in the accident.

Newton police are currently looking into the cause of the crash. Investigations are underway.
