Asheville, NC — The captain of the Asheville Fire Department was killed and 10 other firemen were rushed to the hospital after a four-alarm fire broke out in an Asheville medical building Thursday afternoon, July 28, 2011. Over 60 firefighters responded to the fire at Biltmore Center, which is located at 445 Biltmore Avenue, reported WYFF Greenville.

The fire broke out on the fifth floor of the medical building, which wasn’t big, but was difficult and dangerous to reach, fire officials reported. The fire was located in a part of the building that does not have a sprinkler system, because the building was built before the sprinkler codes were enacted.

Over 200 people were inside of the medical building when the fire ignited, but they were all able to get out safely.

Capt. Jeffrey Bowen, 37, a 13-year veteran of the Asheville Fire Department, was taken to Mission Hospital for medical treatment, after being rescued by fellow firefighters. He was rescued after he made a mayday call from inside of the building.

Bowen reportedly went into cardiac arrest and later died while receiving treatment at the Mission Hospital.

Ten other firefighters were also taken to Mission Hospital for heat exhaustion, knee and back injuries and other injuries.

A full investigation into the deadly fire is underway. It is currently unknown what sparked the blaze.
