Bethlehem, PA — A Bethlehem city inspector fell 10-feet into a ditch at a construction site at Lehigh University on Thursday, June 30, 2011. The fatal work-related accident occurred at about 3:45 p.m. in the 200 block of E. Packer Avenue, just outside the university’s Rauch Business Center, as reported by the Morning Call.

Al Calvo Jr., 58, construction inspector for the city Public Works Department, was inspecting a connection that a construction crew, The Alvin H. Butz Co., had made to the city storm water system when he fell 10 feet into a ditch.

Calvo was injured in the fall and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital-Fountain Hill, where he was pronounced dead.

It is not immediately known what caused Calvo to fall into the ditch.

Police and the Lehigh County coroner’s office are investigating.

“We are shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Al,” said Mayor John Callahan, in a statement. “He was a dedicated employee for the City and he will be missed. My condolences go out to Al’s family and friends.”

Investigators with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigation into the work-related accident.
