5 Injured in Wrong-Way 3-Vehicle Crash in Harford, CT

Hartford, CT — Five people were rushed to the hospital after a wrong-way driver caused a three-vehicle crash that involved a Hartford police car Tuesday night, May 24, 2011. The automobile accident occurred just before 10 p.m., just west of the tunnel near the exits for I-91, reported the Hartford Courant.

State Police reported that a Dodge Stratus entered the highway going the wrong direction, and hit a Mazda 626. The impact of the crash catapulted the Mazda into a Hartford Police cruiser.

Responding emergency medical crews rushed the driver of the Mazda, Luis Torres, 26, of New Britain to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Torres is reportedly in the intensive care unit.

Two underage passengers in the Mazda, ages one and eight, were also injured and taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Three other Mazda occupants, Lydia Bermudez, 41; Ramone Bermudez, 17; and Glenda Santiago, 22, were also injured and taken to Hartford Hospital for medical attention.

The driver of the Dodge, Katrina Headley, 26, of Hartford, and the Hartford Police Officer Anthony Marotta were uninjured in the accident.

Investigations are underway.
