Wheelchair-Bound Man Hit and Killed by Car in North Fort Myers

Fort Myers, FL — A car hit and killed a 71-year-old wheelchair-bound man in North Fort Myers on Sunday night, April 24, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred at about 8:40 p.m., at the intersection of Hancock Bridge Parkway and Orange Grove Boulevard in North Fort Myers, reported Naples News.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that Jose Manuel Acosta, 38, of Fort Myers was driving a 1991 Honda sedan eastbound on Hancock, when he approached the Orange Grove intersection and hit and killed Charles Albert Warber of North Fort Myers. Warber was in his wheelchair at the southeast corner of the intersection when he entered the northbound crosswalk, into the path of the car.

Warber was thrown out of his wheelchair and into the south crosswalk of Orange Grove Boulevard. His wheelchair was found in the northbound left-turn lane.

The traffic signal was reportedly green on Hancock Bridge Parkway at the time. The west crosswalk for Hancock Bridge Parkway displayed a steady red light, police reports reveal.

Investigations are underway.
