Craven County, NC — Two adults and three children, including two infants, were found dead after their SUV ran off the road and into a canal on Sunday, April 17, 2011. The Craven County Sheriff’s office reportedly found the car upside down in the water off Catfish Lake Road, according to WNCT reports.

Police officials reported, a female driver and a male passenger were found inside the vehicle, as well as three children. Two of the children were infants who were still in their car seats when they were found.

Rescuers stated that the muddy water made it difficult to recover the victims.

Police investigators believe speed was a factor in the automobile accident. The North Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed the wreck was not related to Saturday’s storm.

The identities of the victims are being withheld, but the car is registered to a Havenlock resident.

Investigations are underway.
