PA Construction Accident: Forklift snapped at Univ. of Scranton, injured 1

Scranton, PA—A large piece of a forklift fell about six stories and shattered, throwing pieces of the equipment at workers at the University of Scranton. One man was rushed to the hospital following the Wednesday, February 23, 2011 construction accident, reported WNEP.

According to police officials, a forklift was extended six stories into the air at under-construction dormitories, when for unknown reasons, the forklift snapped and a large piece came crashing down onto Monroe Avenue. The piece of machinery shattered in several pieces on impact and were thrown into the air.

One worker was hit in the back of the leg and thrown into the bushes by a piece of the shattered machinery. Responding emergency crews rushed one man to Community Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

It is unknown what caused the forklift to snap.

A full investigation into the construction accident is underway. It was not reported if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating.
