5 FL Dept. of Education employees injured in elevator free-fall

Tallahassee, FL—An elevator plummeted as many as five floors at the 19-floor Turlington Building on Gaines Street. A Department of Education employee sustained a broken leg during the Tuesday morning, January 25, 2011 accident, as reported by Tallahasee.com.

At around 9:24 a.m. an elevator “dropped” as many as five floors, injuring a total of five people. There were eight employees inside the elevator at the time.

One employee sustained a broken leg and was rushed to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for treatment. Four others were transported to a Patients First clinic. Two victims suffered back injuries, one suffered a knee injury and the fourth suffered both back and knee injuries.

Another incident took place at 7:30 a.m., where a different elevator in the building wouldn’t open. The employee remained uninjured.

Both elevators have been shut down while investigations are ongoing.

A routine inspection on Oct. 26, 2010, of all seven elevators at the Turlington Building found no violations, reported the Department of Business & Professional Regulation website.
