Conshohocken, PA—IKEA Home Furnishings, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), voluntarily recalled RUND clear glass mugs due to laceration hazards they pose. The recall, which affects about 13,000 units in the United States, 3,000 in Canada and 112,000 in other parts of the world, was announced on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011.

IKEA received a total of 12 incident reports, 11 of which involved consumers outside of the U.S. One person reportedly suffered a laceration when the glass mug he/she was using broke. That victim received medical attention for his/her injury.

Additionally, four of the 11 incidents that occurred outside the U.S. resulted in injuries. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the inner walls of the double-walled glasses have the potential to shatter during normal use.

According to the CPSC news release, “This recall involves RUND clear glass mugs sold in sizes 4cl, 21cl and 40cl. The mug is handmade of double-walled glass. “Hand Made Quality” is printed on a small transparent sticker on the side of the mug. Article numbers and supplier numbers listed below are located on the package. All sizes were sold in 2-packs.”

The following mug sizes, article numbers and supplier numbers are included in the recall:

• Mug Size: 4cl

Article Number: 301-551-37

Supplier Number: 16790

• Mug Size: 21cl

Article Number: 301-496-79

Supplier Number: 16790

• Mug Size: 40cl

Article Number: 501-496-78

Supplier Number: 16790

The risky RUND clear glass mugs ranged from $5 to $10 and were sold at IKEA stores nationwide between October 2009 and March 2010.

Consumers have been urged to cease use of the potentially dangerous RUND glass mugs and return them to any IKEA store to obtain a full reimbursement.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns have been advised to contact IKEA toll-free at (888) 966-4532 anytime or visit the company’s website at www.ikea-usa.com.
