Iowa City, IA—A construction accident at the University of Iowa art building left a worker dead after he became pinned underneath a beam. The fatal construction accident occurred on Monday, January 24, 2011 near Art Building West, as reported by the Des Moines Register.

The man was killed after he became trapped underneath a beam along the shore of a pond near the art building. Rescue teams from the Iowa City Fire Department worked for hours to remove the worker from under the beam. The worker was pronounced dead the scene.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time. He was employed by a private contractor.

Construction crews were repairing the art building, which was damaged by flooding from the Iowa River in 2008. The flooding closed 20 of the university’s major buildings.

“The University extends its heartfelt condolences to the worker’s family, friends and community,” UI spokesman Tom Moore said

A full investigation is underway.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to investigate.

This is the second contract worker fatality in recent months at the University of Iowa. In September, an employee of a Clive-based glass firm was killed after falling about 40 feet off a ladder, while working on windows at the Boyd Law Building.
