Pittsburgh, PA—Three men were injured when an explosion occurred at a copper plant in Leetsdale on Tuesday, January 11, 2011. The explosion occurred at Hussey Copper, located on Washington Street in the Leetsdale Industrial Park, as reported by Pittsburghlive.com.

Leetsdale police reported that the explosion occurred when water spilled underneath ingots during the copper-making process. The explosion left one worker with burns to 25 percent of his body.

Responding emergency crews rushed the two victims to Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side for treatment of injuries. The most seriously injured worker out of the three was airlifted to Mercy Hospital, Uptown for treatment of burns to 25 percent of his body.

The identities of the victims are being withheld. A full investigation is underway.

It was not reported if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating.

A similar explosion in April 2000 left five workers with injuries when molten copper hit water in a mold.

Over the past 10 years, Hussey Copper has been fined thousands of dollars by the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration for various safety violations, reported a government website.
