Grand Rapids, MI—Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel rushed a Michigan State Police trooper to the hospital after he suffered injuries in a Sunday morning, Jan. 2, 2010 multi-vehicle accident. The crash occurred when three cars lost control on eastbound Interstate 96, as the trooper was investigating a previous wreck, according to information provided by WXMI-TV.

Reports indicated MSP Trooper Roberto Anaya, 57, pulled over to investigate a crash in the eastbound lanes of I-96 when three additional vehicles lost control around 9:55 a.m.

The first car allegedly slammed into the median cable behind Anaya’s patrol car, while the second vehicle rear-ended it. A third vehicle subsequently crashed into the passenger side of the squad car.

Anaya, who was sitting in his patrol car at the time, reportedly suffered head and neck pain as a result of the collision. The injured trooper was taken to Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, where he was treated and released.

While a full investigation will be required to determine the cause of the crash, reports noted that the roadway was covered in snow at the time.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department is expected to conduct a full probe into the Grand Rapids automobile accident.
