Detroit, MI—Mexicantown Wholesale, in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), voluntarily recalled all lots of cuernos (croissants) manufactured between 6/27/10 and 12/28/10, because they pose allergen hazards to certain consumers. A press release concerning the food safety recall, posted Dec. 28, 2010, notes that the product was only distributed to retail stores throughout Michigan.

Detroit-based Mexicantown Wholesale initiated the recall upon discovering that the product may contain undeclared milk. Individuals who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk can suffer a serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the cuernos (croissants).

Additionally, the product contains undeclared wheat and FD&C yellow, which can reportedly induce moderate allergic reactions in consumers who are sensitive to the ingredients.

The company has yet to receive any reports of illnesses or allergic reactions in connection with the recall.

According to the press release, “Cuernos are sold in clear plastic bags of three or four. Packages are marked as “Cuernos Plain (croissant)” with plain labeling or Mexicantown labeling, and the UPC code 95640 00035… The date is marked on a colored label and is coded as follows: a six digit number with the first two digits representing the year, the second two digits representing the month, and the final two digits representing the date.”

Consumers have been urged to contact Mexicantown Wholesale at (313) 894-2000 ext. 105 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST to exchange the product or to obtain a full reimbursement.
