Des Plaines, IL—The Sterno Group LLC, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily recalled approximately 37,500 Sterno Portable Butane Stoves on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that butane has the potential to leak from the stoves if the “on-off” valve does not close completely when turned to the “off” position, leaving consumers susceptible to fire and burn hazards.

While no injuries have yet to be reported to Sterno in connection with the recalled product, the Illinois-based importer received word of one incident in which a stove failed to shut off completely when turned to the “off” position.

According to the CPSC news release, “The recalled portable butane stoves have model numbers STO6001 and 50006. The single burner stoves are black and measure about 14 inches wide x 12 inches long x 4 inches high. They use an eight-ounce butane canister as the fuel source. “Sterno” is printed on the front of the stove. The model number and UPC 0-27371-50006-9 or UPC 0-76642-06001-6 is printed on the stove’s packaging.”

The defective Sterno Portable Butane Stoves were sold at sporting goods stores and other retailers nationwide, including Puerto Rico, between September 2009 and September 2010. The stoves were also sold to restaurants and restaurant supply stores between August 2006 and September 2010. Prices ranged from $20 to $30.

Consumers have been urged to cease use of the risky stoves to avert potential burns or fire-related injuries and/or property damage that could result from the defect and contact Sterno to receive instructions on how to return the product for a complimentary replacement. Consumers are advised NOT to return the stoves to the place of purchase.

Sterno can be reached toll-free at (877) 478-3766 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CT or online at www.sterno.com.
