St. Louis, MO—A teenage girl who was standing in as the “flag girl” to start a street drag race was hit by two cars Sunday night, Dec. 5, 2010. The 17-year-old was rushed to the hospital and listed in critical condition after the hit-and run accident, which occurred north of downtown St. Louis, according to information provided by KPLR.

“It was bad, it was horrific… it was like slow motion. And I really don’t have words for it, it was so bad,” said Amanda Jett, who was watching the race with her husband, Mack, and two others when the violent crash occurred.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., an unidentified teen was standing between two vehicles, acting as the “flag girl” to initiate a street drag race, when one of the racing vehicles, a Mitsubishi Eclipse, slammed into her. A Chevy pickup truck that was also racing then ran her over.

Mack Jett contended, “She kind of got flung out from behind him. She looked like she was a little rag doll bouncing underneath there.”

The victim was listed in critical condition, though the extent of her injuries were not immediately known.

As the Jetts called 911, both the Chevy and the Mitsubishi fled the scene. While police managed to apprehend the driver of the pickup truck, who was only identified as a 19-year-old male, the driver who was behind the wheel of the Eclipse has not been arrested as of yet.

The serious accident occurred at Cass and Collins in North City, which Ann Benson, manager of the nearby Shady Jack’s Saloon, said is a known site for drag racing.

Benson, who claims there are times when hundreds of cars show up for the Sunday night races, noted, “We used to close at twelve o’clock. The last month, month and half we’ve been closing at ten o’clock just because of all the cars out back.”

The Mitsubishi Eclipse had two people in it at the time and was believed to have sustained rear-end damage in the accident.

Charges against the driver of the Chevy pickup are pending.
