Jefferson, WI—A bizarre incident in Jefferson High School’s pool Monday afternoon, Nov. 29, 2010, landed a 17-year-old student and his gym teacher in the hospital with various injuries. According to information provided by Channel 3000, school officials said an underwater viewing window shattered during a physical education class at the school.

Reports indicated students were in Jefferson High School’s pool when an underwater viewing window broke for unknown reasons. Water subsequently spilled into the connected mechanical room, pulling a 17-year-old male through the shattered window.

School Superintendent Michael Swartz contended, “Mr. Fetherston, our instructor, jumped in the water to go to the aid of the student. He, too, was pulled through the window.”

Swartz noted that in doing so, Greg Fetherston sustained minor lacerations and contusions. Emergency responders transported Fetherston to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and released.

The unidentified teenager was reportedly airlifted to the Madison-based University of Wisconsin Hospital. Though the extent of the student’s injuries was not disclosed, he apparently remained hospitalized Monday night.

Investigators are conducting a full probe to find out what might have caused the underwater viewing window to shatter unexpectedly and suck the student into the mechanical room.
