San Bernardino, CA—A wrong-way crash combined with excessive speeds led to the death of two people on Monday, October 11, 2010 on Highway 138. The fatal traffic accident occurred on eastbound Highway 138, east of Highway 2, at 9:25 a.m., as reported by the San Bernardino Sun.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported a Phelan man, 78, was traveling eastbound on the highway in a 2007 Kia, when he apparently crossed the double yellow lines, into the westbound lanes. As he was making a curve in the road, at about 100 mph, he was met head-on with a westbound 2003 Ford Focus. The driver of the Ford, a 54-year-old Anaheim man, veered right to avoid colliding with the Kia, but instead sideswiped the Kia. The impact caused the Ford to drive off the roadway and down an embankment.

A 2001 Chevrolet traveling behind the Ford and turned left to avoid the crash, but the Chevrolet was also sideswiped by the Kia, causing it to stop in the eastbound lanes.

The Kia continued down the highway where it overturned several times before ejecting the driver onto the ground. The Phelan man was killed in the wreck.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 32-year-old man from Highland, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Ford was rushed to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment. He sadly succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.

The CHP is conducting a full investigation into the accident. Officials are withholding the identities of the victims.
