New Haven, CT—A construction accident in Science Park, left four workers injured, including one man who sustained crushing injuries, when a heavy I-beam fell onto the workers. The construction accident occurred around 10 a.m., at 275 Winchester Ave., where Yale University is building a chiller plant, as reported by the New Haven Register.

Officials reported that two workers inside a mechanical lift when the “significant” horizontal beam plummeted about 30 feet from the west side of the structure. The falling beam apparently hit the lift bucket before hitting the ground. The Assistance Fire Chief Ralph Black said, “It was unclear if the other two injured workers were somewhere elevated in the structure and fell to the ground with the beam falling on top of them or they were on the ground when the collapse happened.”

One worker was found pinned underneath the beam from his knees to his hip. He suffered crushing injuries. High-pressure air bags and other equipment had to be used for rescue teams to free the trapped man.

Three other workers were also injured. Officials say the victims sustained seriously injuries, which included broken bones, crushing injuries, and potential internal injuries, but “everybody was conscious and alert.”

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the workplace accident.
