Seattle, WA—A West Seattle water taxi slammed into the historic Pier 50, injuring seven people on Sunday morning, September 26, 2010. The vessel slammed into a sea wall beneath the pier, also known as the Washington Street Public Boat Landing, as reported by the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

The water taxi, named the Rachel Marie, was reportedly traveling at 6 knots at the time, which is about 7 mph.

Seven passengers were transported to area hospitals for treatment of injuries acquired during the crash. One person reportedly fell into the Elliot Bay, but was immediately rescued. The victim’s injuries are not believed to be serious.

The water taxi sustained “fairly significant” damage in the collision.

Passengers said that just prior to the crash, the boat sounded as if the engine would not go into reverse.

The crew blames the crash on a mechanical failure, but police investigators are looking into other causes.

A full investigation is underway.
