Lowell, MA – An allegedly drunk driver struck and killed an off-duty police officer in the early morning of Saturday, September 11, 2010, as reported by The Boston Globe.

Sergeant Patrick Johnson, 31, of Lowell, a six-year veteran, was riding his motorcycle and at the intersection of Princeton Boulevard and Foster Street at approximately 12:30 when he was struck by another vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Johnson, Theary Chan, 26, was arrested later at the same hospital. He was treated there for injuries suffered from the crash.

He has since been charged with motor-vehicle homicide, operating under the influence and failure to stop at a stop sign, according to Lowell Police.

Police reported they found an open container inside the vehicle, which spurred another citation. Chan will be arraigned Monday in Lowell District Court.

Officer Johnson is survived by his wife, a baby girl, and a 3-year-old son.

Lowell Police Superintendent Ken Lavalle said, “I know it’s a cliché and everyone says it when someone dies, but there is no exaggeration, no embellishment, when I say he truly was a great, great man. He was very mild mannered. Never someone you had to worry about. He was a good, good guy. He certainly was highly respected, and very much a gentleman.”
