White Plains, NY – State police reported Tuesday, August 24, 2010, that some passengers who were in a van that overturned on Interstate 287 on Monday were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, as reported by The Journal News. The crash killed one man and injured nine others.

Investigator Joseph Becerra reported those who were ejected from the vehicle were not wearing seatbelts. He also explained they were still working to determine how many people were thrown from the van.

Fernando Panta-Pichazaca, 24, of Danbury, Connecticut, lost his life in the crash. He was reportedly being taken to a job in the Bronx. An autopsy showed he died of a fractured skull.

The wreck happened at approximately 7 a.m. The westbound 2001 GMC Savana slid out of control and flipped. It then wedged into trees in the grassy median between I-287 and Westchester Avenue. Some occupants were thrown and some were pinned under the van.

None of the survivors experienced life-threatening injuries, according to Becerra, and all were recovering at local hospitals.

Becerra explained, “Right now we’re looking at speed and the wet road conditions as possible factors in the accident. No charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing. We’re asking anyone who saw the incident contact state police.”

Police reported the driver of the vehicle was uninjured and has been cooperative with the investigation.
